Seeking Questions for August 6 Governor’s Councilor Candidate Forum

LWV of Newton, in coordination with NewTV and LWV of Arlington and other local leagues, will be holding a Candidate Forum for the upcoming primary contest for the Governor’s Councilor in District 3. Members of the public are encouraged to submit questions for the candidates by no later than July 31. Questions should be relevant to the Governor’s Council seat. Due to limited time, questions will be screened by league board members to ensure a wide range of topics are covered.

The forum will be conducted according to League of Women Voters guidelines. After a brief opening statement from the candidates, a League moderator will ask questions submitted from League members and the public, followed by closing statements from the candidates.

The Forum will take place on August 6 at 5PM and carried live on NewTV.org.

LWVA Annual Meeting June 15

Old Schwamb Mill, 17 Mill Lane, Arlington
Monday, June 15, 2026 at 7 pm

Please join the LWVA for our Annual Meeting at the historic Old Schwamb Mill. We will enjoy a tour followed by a brief business meeting.
The Old Schwamb Mill is the oldest continuously operating mill site in the United States. Mills have been located on the main building site since the late 1600s. In 1864, Charles Schwamb purchased the existing building and began a family business producing oval wooden picture frames. This endeavor lasted more than 100 years. Arlington resident Patricia Fitzmaurice led the effort to turn the mill into a working museum soon after the Schwambs closed their business.

Voting Rights Groups Challenge Executive Order on Mail-In Ballots as Illegal Interference in Elections

A coalition of voting rights organizations filed a lawsuit in the US District Court today [April 2] for the District of Massachusetts challenging President Trump’s March 31 executive order concerning mail-in voting. The Constitution explicitly states that only Congress and the states can set the rules for elections. Nevertheless, the order attempts to displace states’ mail-in voting laws by transforming the US Postal Service from a neutral mail carrier to an arbiter of who may cast a ballot by mail.

The order also requires the Department of Homeland Security to build and give to each state a list of citizens eligible to vote. Given that federal databases are out-of-date and unreliable, this risks mass disenfranchisement of eligible voters.

The suit was filed by the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts, the League of Women Voters, Association of Americans Resident Overseas (AARO), US Vote Foundation, OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates (OCA), and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

They are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), ACLU of Massachusetts, Brennan Center for Justice, Legal Defense Fund (LDF), Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), and LatinoJustice PRLDEF.
