- Untold Stories of Women’s Suffrage Event
Thursday, June 26, 7PM
Arlington Friends of the Drama
22 Academy Street, ArlingtonJoin the League of Women Voters of Arlington, Cantilena Women’s Voices, and Arlington Friends of the Drama for an evening of education and inspiration on women’s suffrage. This is a Free Event as part of the Arlington 250 celebration.
We’ll begin with How Long Must We Wait, a 60-minute documentary film by Jaclyn O’Laughlin about the 72-year battle that women fought to achieve the right to vote in the United States. How Long Must We Wait focuses on the events in 1917 that led to the imprisonment and brutal treatment of suffragists in a prison in Lorton, Virginia. This was considered a turning point in the suffrage campaign, which helped turn public tide and ultimately led to the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920. While that was a huge victory, the film also focuses on the fact that there is still much work left to be done in the fight for women’s equal rights.
The theatre will then host poet/lyricist Joan Szymko’s Lifting As We Climb, a choral and spoken word performance by Cantilena Women’s Voices, Voices Rising, dramatic readers and musicians. Suffragists will come to life, as previously hidden voices of African American women fighting for the vote are heard. Lifting As We Climb is a 100th anniversary commemoration of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, celebrating the history of the women’s suffrage movement while exploring the present day assault on voting rights; anticipating a future that will require a diligent, informed public ready to fight for equality, democracy and universal suffrage.
The evening will be capped off by an informal audience talkback and reception. All ages welcome. If you can contribute toward expenses, donations will be accepted at the event (suggested donation $10). Contact info@afdtheatre.org for more info.
The event will also be broadcast live on Arlington Community Media, Inc. (ACMi).
